Reflection paragraph on process...

For the most part, I found this search to be pretty easy. The thing I enjoyed the most was learning about all of the interesting things that I didn't know before. However, I found it difficult to find some of my essential questions. If I had to do this project again I would research something I knew absolutely nothing about so there would be more for me to learn.

Reflection paragraph on sources...

I found tennisistheme.com to be a very useful site because it contained a lot of good information. Also, livestrong.com because there were many good quotes on that site. It was pretty easy for me to find good source and didn't take long for me to discover which ones were the best and were going to be most useful.

Reflection paragraph on findings...

I have learned many interesting things about the history of tennis and how it's changed over the years since I began my research. One of the most surprising things I found was how many times the equipment had changed before finally using the metal racket. French monks had first used their hands, then the Italians came up with the idea of a wooden racket. The metal racket was finally invented in 1889. Something that I found interesting was that the fastest serve in women's tennis was done by Venus Williams, who recorded a serve of 205 km/h. I feel that I have learned a great deal of interesting information about my topic.

Finding paragraph #3...

One of my essential questions was "How was tennis first played?" I learned that tennis was first played by the french monks in the 11th and 12th centuries. "It was more like handball, played first by hitting against a wall, then later over a crude net. While not gruesome, hitting a ball with one's hand proved a little too uncomfortable after a while, so players began using gloves. Some players then tried using webbing between the fingers of the glove, while others took to using a solid wooden paddle."

Finding paragraph #2...

One of the questions I had initially asked was "What was the first equipment used to play tennis?" I learned that tennis was first played with the hand before switching over to a wooden racket, then being replaced by a metal racket. "Modern rackets are now made from synthetic materials such as carbon fiber."

Finding paragraph #1...

So far I have found a great deal of valuable information. Not only where tennis first originated, but I've also gotten some additional information such as opionions about the sport. Serena Williams once said, "Family's first, and that's what matters most. We realize that our love goes deeper than the tennis game." I found this quote to be very inspirational because I feel the same way.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #5...

I let my racket do the talking. That's what I am all about, really. I just go out and win tennis matches.

I think this is a good quote because it basically means that you should only focus on tennis when you're playing the game. If nothing else is on your mind, you're more likely to excel. You're more likely to win if you have your mind in the game.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #4...

"I carried through well with my tennis. I got the respect by usage of the tennis racket."

Many women earned respect by picking up a racket and playing tennis. Just because they're women, many people believe they're not capable of playing a sport or being good at it. Once they see that they are in fact capable of being the best, they start to respect them.

This shows the percentage of tennis players who play occasionally and frequently. 50% of these players play sometimes. There is about 25% who play often.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #3...

"Family's first, and that's what matters most. We realize that our love goes deeper than the tennis game."

This is saying that tennis players should always put their family first. Tennis is fun and challenging, but family should be the most important thing.

This picture relates to my topic because it shows how much fun tennis can be. It’s a sport that can be played with your family, as well as friends. From this picture, you can tell that they’re having fun.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #2...

"A great tennis career is something that a 15-year-old normally doesn't have. I hope my example helps other teens believe they can accomplish things they never thought possible." - Maria Sharapova

Even though there are not many 15-year-old professional tennis players, it is possible to achieve that. Maria Sharapova is saying that you can accomplish anything you want if you believe.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #1...

"At first, it was a closed competition in which only men and Frech residents could compete."

When tennis first came about, the only people allowed to play were men and French people. Women could not play unless they were French. Today, the sport is much different and everyone is allowed to play.

http://www.historyoftennis.net/

I found this website useful because it gives a lot of good information about the history of tennis. It tells everything from where it originated, to how it was played. It contained a great deal of good information.

http://tennis.about.com/od/history/a/earlyhistory.htm

This website gave information about tennis being played in Ancient Egypt. It also said that it used to be played with the palm of the hand, or the "rahat". It also said that the tennis ball was believed to have looked like a baseball. This website contained a lot of information I had never heard before.

http://www.all-about-tennis.com/history-of-tennis.html

This was a good website because it tells how tennis first evolved. It also said that the game known as it is today is only about 130 years old. It used to be known as "lawn tennis".

http://www.tennistheme.com/tennishistory.html

This website gave information about how tennis used to be played in France. It was then called "Paume". This was because it was played with the palm of the hand.

What I want to learn about tennis...

I already know quite a bit about tennis, however there are still some things I would like to learn.  My essential question is: How has tennis changed over the years?  One of the things I wish to learn is where tennis originated.  I have been told it was in France, but I don't know for sure.  Also, I'd like to know who created tennis.  Another thing I'd like to know is how it was first played.  I've been told that tennis used to be played with the hand, rather than a racket.  I would also like to know who the most famous player is.  Also, what the first tennis outfits looked like.

What I already know about my topic...

Tennis is usually played between two players.  It can also be played in two teams of two players.  This is know singles or doubles.  You use a ball and racket to play tennis.  The balls are made of rubber with a felt coating.  A tennis match is determined by the best set of 3 or 5.

The story behind my topic choice...

I chose this topic because I have always been interested in tennis.  As a teen, my mother played tennis and when I got old enough, she enrolled me into tennis lessons.  I've been taking them ever since.  Because I began such a young age, I grew to love the sport.  Now, I want to know more about tennis.  From where it originated, to how the sport was first played.  I have been told that during the 16th century in France, tennis was played with the palm of a hand.  I would like to find out if this is true.
